While designing a web site :-
- Use a reference (but don’t copy it!) If you see an interesting web design, color scheme or layout, try to use it as a starting point for your own web design.
- Be unique Try to create a unique design. Do not overdone your web design by adding numerous animated GIFs, fade-ins, etc.
- Content is king Create content that purely relates to your website, the more pages with useful content you have the better. Make the body text on your index page focused and avoid the need for the user to scroll down on any page.
- Graphical elements Any Graphics that you use on the website should always support the content and never dominate the content.
- Be HTML-compliant Follow the proper HTML standards and check whether your website is HTML-compliant, to make sure that your website is displayed correctly in all browses.
- File size Make sure that your site is quick to load in any browser. There are obviously a number of factors that can affect how quickly a website loads, but try to make sure that large file sizes isn’t one of them.
- Colorsheme Use a colorscheme of matching colors. Avoid excessive use of shouting colors such as green, yellow, or red.

Flash has indeed caught on the web. It provides an easy way to put animated and interactive movies on web sites, which would otherwise not have been possible. When Flash first made its impact on the web, it was put to two main uses – Animated banner advertisements and Flash intros. Web designers thought that Flash lent a professional look to their web sites – If a web site had Flash, it was like a feather in the web designers hat as it meant that the latest technologies were employed on the site.

While designing/ developing a website do not forget to create a site map. A good site map, which helps visitors at finding information quickly on your web site
- The site map should be the simplest page on your web site.
- Do not give a fancy name to the site map link such as “Web Site Tree” – keep it as “Site map”, this way your visitors understand immediately what you mean.
- You should always avoid “dynamic” site maps. Those in which the visitors have to “work” their way to get hold of information. Remember, the reason visitors comes to a site map page is because they are lost. To make them work again for something that you can display as a simple static link will just kill the purpose of having a site map.
- If the site map is list of text links, be sure to use the TITLE attribute of the anchor tag and include keywords inside it.
- It is a good idea to put a sentence describing the page contents below the link for that page on a site map.
- A site map should not be the primary navigation on your web site it should complement it.
- A link to the site map page is very important and all pages should carry this link. The site map link can be included with other links in the main menu on your web site or placed at a section on the web page from which is it clearly visible.
- Other important aspects on a web site should complement site maps. For example, the link color for visited links should be different from that of non-visited links so that visitors understand which pages they have already seen and thus, save time.
The Importance of a Good Site Layout May 11, 2009

Websites are judged by content and layout. How good your content maybe, if your layout is not appealing, visitors will not be eager to come back. Everyone is not born with a quality of creating layouts that are pleasing to the eye.
Points to consider while designing a website layout: Website design is not a one time activity. Almost all websites alter their layouts to give it a new and better look. Also with advancement in technology, underlying code also changes accordingly, adding new possibilities of providing a better layout.
Keep it simple: A simple website layout is user friendly. Do not create complex navigational links using complex scripts or images that may not be viewable correctly in different browsers. Also search engines cannot index the site properly if complex navigation is involved. Minimize the use of bulky images which take long to load. Use smaller icons to attract visitor’s attention instead.
Readable font size and face: Use a standard font size of “-1″ (11 or 12 pixels if using styles) so that visitors can read the content easily. Select a professional looking font face (Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif are very common). Avoid using fancy fonts like Comic Sans (unless it is a personal website). Use appropriate spacing between lines (12 or more pixels) to avoid clumsiness.
Use web safe eye pleasing colors: The choice of colors may reflect one’s personal taste. Every webmaster or designer wants the color combination that he/she likes best. However, it is a wise decision to get feedback from users or friends about what they feel about the color combination of the website. Use web safe colors whenever possible.
Webpage Dimensions: One important aspect of layout is keeping track of dimensions of a web page. Most successful commercial websites limit the width and height of the webpage so that the important content of the webpage lies within the top 600×600 viewable area without scrolling. To avoid a horizontal scrollbar, set the page layout to expand and shrink with changes in browser window size. Sometimes this interferes with image and text positions relative to each other and throws the layout structure out of sync. The best choice is to limit the width by placing a table with a fixed width of 750 or 775 pixels. See the layout of this web page for an example.
The page height should not be any more than 4 scroll lengths. Limit the content of the page and if more content needs to be added, move it to a new web page. Provide a navigational link to the next page and a link back from the second page. This will also increase your web site’s page views (adding more advertising space).
Limit File Size: Webpage size is defined by the total size of text, images and supporting files (including javascript, flash etc.) that is downloaded from the server to view a webpage. Page size is very critical for high volume websites because of high bandwidth needed. However, it is also very important for any other site in order to keep loading times to a minimum. Most of the population on the internet use a slow 56K modem to access the internet. And smaller page sizes load faster. If you look at some very high volume websites like Yahoo.com and Google.com, they hardly have any images, making their site load faster.
There is a trade off between making your webpage look nicer with lots of graphics and making it faster to load. The rough target for page size should be below 35K for at least the cover page. However, for e-commerce sites, it is often not possible because they have to present multiple product images to attract attention. As a general rule of thumb, a visitor will leave your site if the loading time is more than 8 secs.

Corporate Identity represents the business philosophy, ethics and the achievements of an organization and therefore its importance in the world of marketing is undeniable. The visual appearance of an organization needs to be changed time-to-time for brushing up the impact of an Organization’s corporate identity. This can generate positive outcomes by restraining the dilution of the brand identity of an organization. The importance of Corporate Identity is irrefutable as it aids an organization to differentiate itself from the rival companies by creating a distinctive identity.

Without doubt, brands are an important influence on our lives. Strong brands offer values way beyond the performance of the product or service and possess an idea worthy of customer loyalty. It’s who you are. Your corporate Identity impacts all aspects of your business and plays a vital role in your customer’s overall experience with your organization. Traditional print, although fading in popularity, as the Web becomes a more common means of communication, is still necessary.
